SOWING SEEDS IN HEARTHLAND

Special Projects, ArtX Lagos, Nigeria, 2022

On a large rectangular patch of soil will be 7 women gathered with bags full of clay and tree saplings. Each woman will coiled a clay vessel until the last bit of clay in the bag was used. Large amounts of soil was scooped up into each vessel and then the sapling was planted. Seeds were then spirnled onto the soil carpet; for the audince to scoop up and take home with them.
The intention behind this performance was thus: the environment is the people, and people are the environment. As our ecological future is upon us, this performance acts out the essential connection between we humans and our environment using the literal and semiotic aspects of the feminine (intimacy, care, vulnerability, the vessel). In the breaking down of the vessel, we consider how a relationship to nature can break down often violent mechanical and ideological structures to facilitate new growth and healing.
