My work with clay is an intimate form of personal and social exploration. I find it an extraordinary material with great narrative and curative powers.
I work intuitively with clay, collaging embellished slabs into form. The embellishments interweave references from Yoruba spiritual and textile culture, and Anglo-Saxon formal gestures and traditions. Pushing the material to its limits with extremely thin walls, I deliberately engage with the concept of fragility and vulnerability.
The terracotta clay body, the gesture, the vessel, vulnerability and fragility all engage with the semiotic aspects of the feminine and are important aspects of my work.
